Post-Holocaust Day: #219

[Harrier-651: Cidra] Nothing says 'pending merger' like a team-building exercise. And, though full folding of two Wing operations into one within the Fleet is still just a vague rumor, that is precisely what the CAGs of the Cerberus and Areion have put together today. For their Viper pilots, specifically. The four ships of the Fleet - Cerberus, Corsair, Praetorian and Areion - are arrayed in their standard formation over Aerilon. Only one slight difference about them for this little game. On each of them, the outside one of the airlocks has been 'highlighted' in bright green light. A clear target. All one has to do is reach it. The 'track' from ship-to-ship is a standard CAP flight pattern. The goal for each flight to Vipers: to 'tag' each ship, in succession, before their opponent does. The Vipers are now assembling at a designated 'starting gate' a few clicks off Cerberus' starboard and fore. The battlestar marks the first 'leg' of the race. From their, the path shall take the Vipers from Corsair to Praetorian to Areion…provided their opponents' lasers don't end their flight before they reach the finish line.

[TAC2] "Toast" Cidra says, "Cerberus and Areion Flights, Toast," crackles Cidra's voice over the comm channel that's been cleared for join traffic during this exercise. The Cerberus CAG is observing this little game from flight control on the battlestar. And her counterpart, Lt. Col. Baer, is doing the same from the vantage of the Areion. "Once you are assembled discharge guns once. Let us make sure training lasers are properly set. We do not want to scratch the paint on our airlocks. Sing out when ready and we shall begin countdown. Remember, do not deviate from designated flight path or try to get an early jump out. Doing so means forfeiting this exercise for your own side. Now, into position, test guns when ready."

[BlackKnight-650: Andrea] Andrea is visibly excited as she climbs into her Viper, and the smile stays on her face as she launches out into the void of space. It was a chance to fly again, and also to show her stuff to her new wing. Falling into formation, she waits for the contest to begin.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] The Areion's Viper pilots are right on time and on the spot, led by Major Dirk "Birdie" Finch. Birdie pew-pews off a couple quick jolts of laser fire. With flare, if showing flare while firing straight ahead at nothing is possible.

[TAC2] (from "Toast" Cidra) And over the comm Finch's deep voice rings out, "Cerberus, Areion, guns are good. Birdie in position. Fiasco, Dizzy, Awol, form up. Let's show these regulars how it's done."

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] If firing straight ahead at nothing with flare is possible, Fiasco is totally doing it. Though, to be fair, he is flying straight ahead at nothing while rotating, so there is that.

[Harrier-651: Trask] Pew-pews are accompanied by some barrel rolls courtesy of Captain Lana "Dizzy" Drake, who is certainly living up to one of the reasons she has that callsign.

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Devlin is nervous. That much is obvious to those who know him well simply by the fact that he doesn't say anything as he launches, or afterwards, beyond acknowledging receipt of Cidra's instructions. He forms up where he's supposed to, and tests his lasers with a single burst, and then waits.

[TAC2] Devlin says, "Devlin here, copy that, Toast."

[TAC3] "Bubbles" Psyche says, "Flight, Bubbles. You heard the CAG. Let's make sure we're not going to perforate any of the ships or our new friends' shiny rides. 'Cause wouldn't that be a shame? Nugget, you take first shot at Cerberus. Grunt, you take the Corsair. Hosedown and me'll take the final two targets. Stay with your section, folks. Let's cover each other's asses and do this by the book. Fly awesome, but remember it's just friendly like."

[Harrier-651: Cidra] LT Allison "Awol" Moran is among the Areion pilot's taking part in this little exercise today. She forms up on Fiasco's wing. Keeping a wide berth of Birdie and Dizzy. Maybe keeping in mind the latter's love of loopey barrel rolls. Her guns are properly lasered, she's ready to go.

[BlackKnight-309: Psyche] Bubbles usually puts a little wiggle in her ride, herself — but today she's being uncommonly reserved. She flies smooth and straight as an arrow, easy for her wingmate to stick with, and takes her test shots.

[TAC2] "Toast" Cidra says, "Flight, Toast. Copy. You may begin on Go. From count of three. One…two…three…Go!"

[Harrier-651: Cidra] And they're off to the races.

[TAC2] (from "Bootstrap" Trask) In a sunny voice, Dizzy tells Birdie, "On your wing, my little chickadee." From all those spins, she levels straight as though she hadn't done a single one and is off at a dizzying speed after her SL.

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Fiasco, at least, has ceased his barrel rolls, not quote so fond of them as Dizzy, it seems. "Alright, AWOL," he says into the coms, "Let's show these regulars, huh?" And lest anyone be confused about who's talking, he lets out a loud whoop and takes off rapidly after Birdie and Dizzy.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] Finch is off his mark like a shot, forming up with Dizzy smoothly. His flight style is more straight-ahead than his more rolly wingman, but the two of them do clearly have a long-developed repour together. One might think they would first take out one of the more experienced pilots. But the first thing they do is zero in on little Nugget Devlin.

[BlackKnight-309: Psyche] "Frak me if I don't know which one of 'em I want to shoot most," Bubbles mutters, off-com. She blows out a breath and puts on the throttle, sweeping into position behind the Areion's SL.

[BlackKnight-650: Andrea] Time to play, eh? Andrea smiles as she picks a target, getting that target set in her sights as she moves to fire. The more who die now, the fewer there to stop them, right?

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Devlin forms up on Andrea's wing as directed, and takes off along with the rest when the mark is given, doing his best to keep up with his wingman and evade the enemy who seem to be suddenly swarming after him.

[TAC3] Devlin says, "Sorry you're stuck with me, Hosedown," Devlin says into the coms, "But lemme know where you want me, and I'll do my best.""

[TAC3] "Hosedown" Andrea says, " Nugget, this is Hosedown, looks like I've got some friends this time around. Go ahead and take the shot, I'll see if I can keep them busy."

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Fiasco flies up to the point where he might attack Devlin…and then doesn't, instead executing a fancy little flip-and-turn manuever, just because he can.

[TAC2] Devlin says, "Woooooo!" That'd be Fiasco. "See that, nugget? I could've just shot you all up. But that wouldn't be very sportsmanlike and Baer says we should be friendly, so you just remember that, alright?"

[TAC3] Devlin says, "Hosedown, Devlin. I'm pretty sure those are my friends, but thanks for the help. I'll try to need as few shots at this as possible, but… you know. Might take a bit."

[Harrier-651: Trask] Dizzy does her job protecting her wingman and does so with another display of aerial acrobatics that actually *deflects* the brunt of the shots sent her way.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] Finch breaks off some from Dizzy as he nears the Cerberus, swooping down to get as good a bead as he can on the target. He basically ignores Devlin now, not seeing him as much competition for this apparently.

[BlackKnight-309: Psyche] Bubbles' lips twitching with grim satisfaction as her first shot light up the Areion SL's wing, then pull down into a scowl as Fiasco's taunt comes over the coms. "Motherfrakker. I wonder if I can bribe someone to put depilatory in his shampoo." 'Cause really, when a guy's that metro, you go for the hair.

[TAC2] (from "Bootstrap" Trask) "Aww. You let your little nugget out to play with the big kids?" That's so cute! Truly, Dizzy sounds as though she thinks this is absolutely adorable, like Devlin were a puppy whose tummy she wants to rub. Which, really, is worse than mockery in certain respects.

[Into the Wireless] "Aww. You let your little nugget out to play with the big kids?" That's so cute! Truly, Dizzy sounds as though she thinks this is absolutely adorable, like Devlin were a puppy whose tummy she wants to rub. Which, really, is worse than mockery in certain respects.

[BlackKnight-650: Andrea] After giving a short whoop with her first hit, Andrea smiles as she sees two birds moving in on her position. Having given her wingmate some instructions, she then keeps on her target while jerking around to make herself a harder hit. "Come on, bring it…" she mutters to herself as she pulls the trigger…

[TAC3] "Bubbles" Psyche says, "Grunt, Bubbles. Let Finch have his shot — I want that bottle-blonde trollop off our nugget."

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] With Andrea covering him and ignoring the various sorts of taunting going on, Devlin flies as fast as possible towards the Cerberus target and takes aim.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] It's almost as if Finch is toying with Devlin. He zeroes in nice and easy, waiting until the last possible second to shoot. And he does hit the target first, of course. It's a Major against a Nugget. Anything else would've been just sad. But it's only a second before Devlin's lasers also find their mark. So Areion wins. By less than one would expect. The sharp veering of Finch as they head off to the next target on the Corsair shows annoyance rather than triumph.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] It's Awol who is apparently taking targeting duty on the Corsair. In for it she goes.

[TAC3] "Bubbles" Psyche says, "Damn it, Grunt, what the frak was that — I told you to retarget and cover the nugget. If Dizzy'd been a cylon, we would have lost him while you went chasing after a non-essential target. Get your head out of your pretty ass and pay attention."

[TAC3] "Hosedown" Andrea says, " Crap, I lost the nugget. Bubbles, Hosedown. You've got some company, as well."

[Harrier-651: Trask] Sticks and stones, Psyche. Much like the shot that doesn't even dent Dizzy's bird, as opposed to, say, the Captain's bang-on hit on Devlin. As she zooms past the nugget, she gives him a little wing wiggle, like a pat on the head or a scritch behind the ears.

[TAC3] Devlin says, "Bubbles, stop calling other guys pretty and tell me what I should be doing. Sim says my controls are frakked up some, but still."

[TAC3] "Bubbles" Psyche says, "Evade, Nugget. Evade and try to lay down some cover, but mostly evade. Hosedown, your wingmate's not out of the game, yet. Cover him."

[TAC3] (from "Toast" Cidra) Wilkerson actually replies with a somewhat contrite (if laconic), "Bubbles, Grunt. I gotcha, El-Tee. Inbound to the Corsair. Just cover my pretty ass."

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Devlin makes his shot just after Birdie, and then gets tagged by Dizzy, badly enough that the sim shuts his controls down for a minute and makes him spin around helplessly in place before he's able to right his bird and get back on track, evading as requested and targeting Fiasco, since that's his wingman's target.

Trask (Kal) pages Cidra and Devlin: For the record, Dizzy will announce on the Areion chan, "Hey, Birdie. How 'bout you don't kick the already down puppy and cover my ass instead?"

[Harrier-651: Cidra] Finch keeps, unerringly, bearing down on Devlin. Perhaps in search of vengeance for 'nearly' being embarrassed by him on the first target. This, rather unfortunately, leaves Wilkerson far less molested to get in a good hit on the Corsair's lit-up 'target board' before Awol can reach it. So, one point Cerberus.

[TAC3] "Hosedown" Andrea says, " Bubbles, Hosedown. Sorry, I've been having some coms troubles. I can't get this frakker off of the rookie, it's like the kid's a magnet for them. Falling into formation."

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Devlin gets hit by Finch again despite his best efforts to evade, the older pilot… well, just a lot better at this. The sim registers the laser, and informs him that he's dead, and so he stays there in mid air where he was tagged, before turning around to head out of the way of the continuing race.

[TAC3] Devlin says, "All, Devlin. Sorry, I'm out. I guess two serious hits is all this sim gives, so… yeah. Consider me dead. Good luck."

[Harrier-651: Cidra] Awol jots back into formation with Fiasco, her entire flying style registering Pissed Off. Much static as words are likely exchanged over the Areion comm.

[TAC3] "Bubbles" Psyche says, "Frak. Nugget, Bubbles. That's twice — back to the barn for you. Excellent frakking shooting, though. And Grunt! I take it all back — you're my new frakking hero. Hosedown, this is your shot coming up. Clear eyes, babe. Hit it."

[TAC3] (from "Toast" Cidra) Wilkerson's reply is a simple, "Bubbles, Grunt. Got it, boss. I shoot pretty, too."

[BlackKnight-650: Andrea] Andrea pounds the side of her bird as Devlin blinks out, and then notices the enemy birds flying her way. Just in time for her shot at the dance. Excellent.

[TAC2] (from "Bootstrap" Trask) Sweet and effervescent as strawberry fizzy pop, Dizzy tells Devlin, "You did well, pup. Now kick back and watch how it's done."

[TAC3] "Hosedown" Andrea says, " Bubbles, Hosedown. I read you, taking my shot."

[TAC3] "Bubbles" Psyche's whoop and laughter ring out over the com. "Grunt! Frak, you are so pretty. NICE job. Hosedown, sing out — that looked owie. How are you?"

[Harrier-651: Trask] If 'it' is getting shot down while missing your shot, Dizzy just gave a magnificent demonstration.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] And it's…a statistical tie as the Vipers round the course to the Praetorian. Andrea and Dizzy's guns are both right on the market on the port flank of the Praetorian, where it's 'target' is lit up. If any one hit sooner than the other, the difference was too narrow for anyone's instruments to record. So it's 1 Areion, 1 Cerberus going into the final leg of this little race. Toward the CEX Areion herself. Dizzy and Andrea will not be finishing it, however. As both of their ships are lit up real good by their opponents. Their systems read 'out' of the game.

[BlackKnight-650: Andrea] Andrea frowns as she pushes her Viper forward. She manages to dodge the first salvo, but staying on pace to even tie for the target means that the second gets a clear shot, and soon her computer is reporting that she is dead. Crap.

[TAC2] "Bubbles" Psyche says, "Diz! Bubbles! Is that how it's done? No shit!"

[TAC3] "Hosedown" Andrea says, " Bubbles, Hosedown. Looks like I am out of it for this run. Give 'em hell on the home stretch, boss!"

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Fiasco is up coming into the final target, having escaped the worst of the fire Dizzy's taking, though not as unscathed as AWOL or Finch. He speeds towards the target, flying erratically enough to make hitting him more difficult, though there must be some targeting-method to his madness.

[TAC2] Devlin says, "WOOOO!" Fiasco exclaims into the coms, "You and me, Bubbles! Just like it's meant to be! Best asses in the room, right here. Or space, whatever. Let's see what you've got, girl."

[TAC2] (from "Bootstrap" Trask) "It's called setting-up the dramatic climax, Bubbles." Duh. "Grand finale's all yours, dimples," Dizzy merrily calls to Fiasco.

[BlackKnight-309: Psyche] Bubbles pushes the throttle smoothly forward, taking a deep breath as she compensates for the little jerks and jinks her bird is throwing out to simulate the damage she's taken. "Oh, Athena, bless this shot," she mutters, "I know it's not critical or anything, but these people? Really frakking irritate me." She doesn't respond to the coms, shutting everything else out but the target and her viper, an extension of her body in the cold silence of space.

[Harrier-651: Cidra] Awol and Finch turn their blazing KEW guns on Bubbles as she zeroes in toward the Areion. And they find their mark on the newly-minted Cerberus LT. But not before she hits hers. Psyche's lasers ping the Areion, right on target, a hair before Fiasco's. And it's…Cerberus, for the win. 2:1. If somebody was betting on the battlestar regulars, they just made some decent cubits given the odds.

[BlackKnight-853: Devlin] Fiasco hits the target a split-second after Psyche and spirals off away from the Areion, barrel rolling in what could be either horror or celebration or… who the frak knows.

[TAC3] "Hosedown" Andrea says, " Bubbles, Hosedown. Frak YEAH, girl!"

[TAC2] Devlin says, "Aww, FRAK NO!" Fiasco laughs into the comms, "Damn, girl! I got so distracted watching your backside I almost forgot I was supposed to tag that target and not it. Whatever, nice shooting, 'specially with Finch and AWOL on you. You lot hung in there pretty good for a while, no shit."

[BlackKnight-309: Psyche] Bubbles slumps back into her seat, laughing helplessly, adrenaline making her completely drunk and stupid. It's all she can do to keep flying, especially considering the hurt Awol and Finch just put on her. But keep flying she does — little more than spit and spite and ego keeping her bird intact. She screams her elation and beats the canopy. Woo!

[TAC2] (from "Toast" Cidra) Wilkerson breathes in laconic triumph, "Bubbles. Grunt. Cool."

[BlackKnight-650: Andrea] Dead or not, Hosedown flies into formation with Bubbles, waggling her wings triumphantly as she does so. Inside her canopy she is war whooping for all she is worth, but she keeps it off the wireless. No one aboard any of these ships wants Andrea shouting into their ears, after all.

[TAC2] (from "Toast" Cidra) Finch does some audible grunting over the comm before responding coherently. But when he does it's a terse, "Not bad for a regular, Bubbly. We won't go so easy on you next time."

[TAC2] "Bubbles" Psyche's reply is laughing and breathless. "Thanks, Fiasco. Finch. Not bad yourselves, fellas. Ladies and gentlemen of the Areion, Bubbles. On the behalf of the Cerberus regulars, it's been an honor outflying you and outshooting you this evening. Safe home, y'all."

[TAC2] (from "Bootstrap" Trask) Dizzy doesn't sound the least bit horrified. In fact, she sounds as bubbly as ever, mildly chastising Finch "Oh, don't be all squawky like a fox-ruffled hen, Birdie. High-road. Noble sacrifice for the well-being of others. Bunnies and rainbows." As if she were some manner of personal cheerleader wanting the opposition to feel positive and encouraged and stuff. "Good game, kids. Be sure to bring the pup to the next match."

Hangar Deck - Port - Midship - Battlestar Cerberus
The single largest rooms on the Cerberus are the hangar decks. Each flight pod consists of two stacked landing bays with adjoined decks and hangars, which along with computer-assisted landings results in a faster Viper recovery rate. Mirror images of each other, these two huge areas are located on the flight pods. The inboard sides of the deck, closest to the ship's main hull, are lined with parking and maintenance bays for Vipers and Raptors based aboard the battlestar. The outboard side of the deck contains the launch tubes used by the Vipers for standard deployment. Huge blast doors seal the deck into four sections, each one containing an elevator that leads up to the flight deck directly overhead. The fore-most section contains an elevator system that leads towards Aerospace Fabrication.
Post-Holocaust Day: #219

Devlin is already hanging around in the…hangar, listening on the coms to the rest of the contest. So when the other pilots land, he is ready with a smile and arms in the air to celebrate victory.

Andrea can barely wait for the knuckledraggers to get her gear off before she is all but jumping out of her Viper and running over to the other pilots. "Oh, frak yeah, that showed them! Where can we get a drink on this bird? This calls for some celebration!

Psyche vaults out of her Viper the second she's out of her helmet and collar, bounding down to the deck and grabbing each of her squad in turn for a hug. "DAMN fine flying, you guys! Damn fine! Frak! And Grunt?" She licks her fingertip and applies it to Wilkerson's backside, making the requisite hissing sound. "Also! Alex!" She turns to beam at the nugget. "YOU, sir, have a callsign now. And I'm afraid it's not to honor your fine shooting."

Devlin watches Psyche bound around, arms dropping after a second, hands moving to shove into his pockets, since he's taken his flight suit off in the time he's been hanging around on the deck waiting. When the blonde bounces up to him, he blinks at that, and does not look entirely thrilled so much as wary. "I do? …what and why?"

Andrea grins as they bunch around the nugget, smiling. "You took an awful lot of fire there, kid. And they COULD have been shooting at us, instead." She gives Psyche a grin. "I think its only fitting."

"Well, here's how I see it," Psyche puts on her most charming smile, then points at Andrea's explanation. "This." She nods. "So in honor of thy noble sacrifice, thou shalt be 'Nugget' no longer." A beat. "I hereby dub thee, 'Decoy'."

Devlin is wary, so very wary, and also skeptical. "I didn't do anything but be there," he replies to Andrea, "And, I mean, you guys kind of got hit anyhow. Pretty sure they only targeted me to be dicks." Not that he seems overly broken up about that part. When Psyche puts forward the callsign, though, he relaxes a little, visibly. "Oh. I thought you were gonna go with 'Puppy' or something, like whatserface, your weird evil Areion twin was calling me," he tells Bubbles, "I mean, I really didn't do anything, but I can live with Decoy."

Andrea shakes her head. "Can't let another wing name you, now can we?" She then gives the two a hug. "Ok, we seriously need to party. I haven't had a reason to party forever."

Psyche puts a hand on her hip. Her Royal Highness Bubbles I is Not. Amused. "That daffy bint is NOTHING like me." And anyone who disagrees? Is clearly not bunking with HER tonight. Andrea's enthusiasm puts a smile back on her face, though. "Celebration is totally in order. I think we have some rum left. But first, post-flights and showers. We'll reconvene in the berths." She claps her hands delightedly. "You guys were so GOOD!" she bounces, bubbling with delight.
