Background

Mark Makinen, a native of Picon, had a slow start that snowballed downhill quite quickly once the momentum was found. He did a short four-year enlistment on the Battlestar Volans working Deck detail before heading for college. A few degrees, a doctorate, and about a decade later, Dr. Makinen was working for one of the largest defense contractors in the Colonies: Denniger-Gram Corp. With DGC's recent award of the systems contracts for much of the new line of ships coming out over the next ten year budget projection, they hired on a wealth of fresh minds. Mark found himself accelerating through the corporation and by 2040 he was the person in charge of Systems Integration for the Praetorian and was on-site during much of the final phase of construction at the Leonis Naval Yards. He was returning to Leonis for a lay-over before his flight home to Picon when the bombs hit. He was picked-up by the Operation Cobra Talon team and rescued from the prison in Rutger Tower. Upon return to the flight he signed-up straight away and has been serving as an Engineering Lieutenant on the Praetorian. Since the attacks on the fleet above Tauron, Mark had been transferred to the Cerberus to help troubleshoot and run refitting teams but following the severe injuries to Captain Gabrieli, he was promoted into the ChEng slot.

Immediate Family

Mark's family isn't well documented by fleet records because he had not worn a uniform in nearly 18 years when Warday struck. He has no problem discussing his mother and father, though. An only child growing up in the aftermath of the first war, he talks fondly of his friends growing up and his activities. Currently the only person alive that he considers more than a friend is the Harrier's LT Leyla Aydin. She currently bunks with him and she is listed as his next of kin. He considers her to be much more than just a mate though the two are not legally married.

Physical Features

Mark stands six feet high on a slender frame. This man about forty still has a lot of life to his green eyes despite the weary, tired expression that usually occupies his face. There is an old and very light scar that runs across the bottom of his chin that fades away after a few inches. Buzz cut brown, almost black, hair salt and peppers his head.

Mark is dressed in a Colonial officer's uniform. The medium blue jacket is tucked into matching trousers, with a black, brass-buckled belt around the waist. A softer, darker blue fabric decorates the shoulders. The black buttons are off-center, running up the right hand side of the tunic. The left breast sports a single button-down pocket. On his left sleeve is the black, gold and white Battlestar Cerberus patch. The pins on his collar show a rank of Major.

Trivia

  • Mark loves 'hawaiian' shirts (not sure what to call them in this theme). He's usually wearing one under his orange coveralls. His collection can be seen below.
  • A little bit of humor from the Marines Channel about Mark's favorite song: Cypress Hill - Hits From the Bong
