Longinus Corsel was born on Gemenon in 2014. The Corsels belonged to a secretive monotheistic cult that worshipped Mithras. Longinus was not taught the mysteries of his parents’ religious order until he turned 13, as even family members were considered outsiders of the religion until they undertook the initiation rites. Longinus chose to be initiated, and became a devout follower of Mithras during his teenage years.

In 2032, a group of polytheistic fundamentalists discovered the Corsels’ place of worship and burned it to the ground. This sparked a “witch hunt” in Longinus’s village, where people who were suspected of being monotheists were harassed, threatened, and bullied. The Corsels were forced to flee from their home and start their lives over with little money and possessions. Hoping for a completely new beginning, Longinus enlisted in the Colonial Fleet, and left his homeworld behind.

Out of boot camp, Longinus specialized as an aircraft handler. His first posting was on the Escort Carrier Delphus, where he served for three years. For the first time in his life, he lived a relatively secular lifestyle. He was unable to partake in many of the rituals required of him by his religion, but worshipped privately, in secret, as best he could. Over time, he became used to interacting with people from different worlds with very different cultures, and found that he could get along with most people as long as he avoided religious topics.

Longinus next served on the Battlestar Aegean until 2038, when he received a teaching position on Picon training aircraft handler apprentices fresh out of boot camp. He attended the Battlestar Cerberus commissioning ceremony on Picon Anchorage, to congratulate a few former students of his who had been posted to the Cerberus. On that fateful day, the Cylons attacked. Since then, Longinus has been serving on the Cerberus, and privately rebuilding his shaken faith in Mithras.
