Sickbay,
Being able to accommodate combat casualties requires room, and the Sickbay has it. Beds line each side of the room with privacy curtains strung up and readily available. Large vaulted lockers hold access to the supplies at the far end of the area. Nearer the front, a Petty Officer sits ready to dispense simple items like ibuprofen and aspirin. Further to the rear is an area prepped twenty-four hours a day for emergency surgery. To the side are a set of double doors that lead to the Recovery Ward where patients can recuperate.
Callista enters with a cup of coffee in each hand, somehow looking relaxed despite everything that has happened. Setting one of the mugs down on Hawke's desk with a bright smile, her tone cheerful, "Good Morning Abram, how are you doing today?" Pulling up a nearby stool she sits down carefully, taking a sip of her own coffee.
Hawke chuckles to himself, taking the cup gratefully and taking a sip. "Ah, bless you, Kaycee. Doing much, much better now, thanks." He takes a seat. "Just finishing up the post-op paperwork. Our surgery is still shooting 00. Our worst hurt from Picon are already flying again." He looks up at her. "And how are you doing?"
Alexander Aurelia enters into medical and he has a something in his hand and it is covered in plastic wrap. It would look like fresh chocolate cake, well, a slice really. Alexander is being lead by a bored looking marine since it would appear he is no longer part of the Fleet anymore and he is back to an old fashioned civilian job. As the marine follows him Alexander says nothing as he is in a more reflective mood these days.
Callista finishes up her little chat with Hawke and stands up, as she turns she spots her brother and waves to him. Coffee in hand she rushes over to give Alexander a hug and avoid spilling her hot beverage all over him, "Lexi, I'm so glad to see you." She hugs her brother a little tighter before letting go, "How are you and what did you bring me?" Her tone filled with childlike enthusiasm at the prospect of a gift.
Alexander looks at Kayce after he has given his sister a gentle squeeze and after the hug he says, "Kaycee, I brought you cake that is to be shared. Ms. Averies had a birthday and I thought I should share this with you. See, chocolate cake." As for how he is Alexander says, "And I've been released from my service to the Fleet." He lets the Marine wait on him as he opens the cake for Callista to smell, "Mmmmmm. Cake. This is on my list of inappropriate foods you know?"
Callista accepts the cake with a grin on her face, "I do and thank you for thinking of me, you always do." Setting her coffee down, she reaches over to take Alexander's hand in her own and asks concerned, "How have you been doing Lexi?"
Alexander looks at Callista and when his hand is taken he squeezes, "Kaycee, I've been thinking." Which is Lexi's way of saying he has been looking at something from every angle, "After listening to the pilots chatter on the night of the attack I think that we might be in a very dangerous situation." His voice is calm since he has had time to sort it all out, "I don't have enough information about anything but I do think that things back on the Colonies might be very bad."
Callista raises her eyebrows and sighs softly, "Lexi, you don't know..?" She leans in close to her brother, her tone low for those who may not know and whispers in his ear, "Picon and Virgo have both been destroyed, the other colonies to probably."
The news doesn't seem to shock Alexander at all and the actor looks at Callista and he looks a bit tired, not just weary, but as if his soul were tired, "I calculated as much from what I knew of the initial attack." Alexander holds the cake in his hand and with his other hand he produces two forks, "The let us eat cake. To remember the good times." Alexander takes a moment to study Callista now, "How are you doing?"
Callista shrugs her shoulders and smiles at her brother, "I'm fine, all things considered…" Snatching one of the forks out of Alexander's hand, she teases him, "Don't worry about me, worry about the cake."
Alexander looks at Callista, "I think not. You are my baby sister and I will worry about you. Right now you have a job to do and people to care for. I spend my days now a bit bored since I have little to do beyond sit in the guest berthings and read books. I don't think there will be a need for me to do research for the movie anymore. So, I spend the rest of my time working about you."
Callista considers things for a moment, lips pursed while she thinks, she sighs again, "You're such a sweet brother you know that Lexi? Let me see, hmmm…" She continues to consider it for a few more moments before suggesting, "Well, um. It's possible we may need some more help in medical. I can try and talk to my boss and see what she thinks, that way you're not so like, unbusy?"
Alexander looks at Callista and he smiles for a moment, "You are my sister Kaycee, and I'm glad you are in medical and not in the wing. It is dangerous over there." There is a pause for a moment and then there is a simple and humble reponse given to Callista, "Kaycee, I don't think the Fleet wants me. They view me as being a poser, some pretty boy that wants to come in and look heroic. This was made clear to me over and over again while I worked with the wing. Besides, I don't have many skills that the Fleet will need. I can shoot and hit things and I am sure Marines and Officers can do a better job than I can."
Callista shakes her head and says with a hint of dissapointment, "Lexi, but you could do so much more, you are capable of so much. If you want to help, I'm sure the fleet will accept it…" She smiles at him, "Like I said, even medical could probably use a hand, someone to cheer up patients, help sign people in. I don't know…"
Alexander looks at Callista for a moment, "Yeah, you are right." Alexander takes a moment to give that same tired look to Callista, "Though maybe I should rest for a while. Kaycee, if the Colonies are gone then I am not really famous anymore and that means there are no longer expectations on me. It has been such a long time since a thought like that has entered into my head." The actor looks like he hasn't slept for at least a day, "I should probably check with QUODEL to see what they need. I mean, they might have something new for me to do as well."
Callista nods her head, "Yeah, that's not a bad idea, they might need someone like you with good speaking skills. Who knows….." Touching her brother's arm softly, she asks, "Have you been sleeping? You look worn Lexi."
Alexander looks at Callista and he is clean, shaved, his clothes are the same but there is that look on his face, it is all in the eyes. They look so, so tired. "I have been getting a few hours here and there. I've been to busy thinking about things. If this is the end of the Colonies, I mean, if it really is then we need to pull together. I've been reading the Sacred Scrolls and I've been reading books from other prophets and I don't know what to make of it all."
Callista raises her eyebrows and shakes her head at her brother, "Don't talk or think like that you goof, this isn't the end of anything. We will move on and we'll make things better then before…" She rolls her eyes before continuing, "You know I wouldn't lie, just be positive for the future and um.." She twirls her fork around her fingers, "Shall we eat that delectable cake?"
Alexander looks over at Callista, "Of course. That is why I brought you the food." Ever the older brother he doesn't mention anything else about the possible end of the Colonies and his sudden helplessness in this situation. "I thought you might enjoy some of this. "You go first." He says for two reasons, the first is to see the look of joy on his Sister's face and the second because he is still a diehard actor and the thought of so much sugar in one food scares him a bit. "How Ms. Averies got cake I will never know. Though she seems like a good person."
Callista takes a big piece of the cake with her fork and chews it slowly, enjoying every moment before remarking, "She must be well liked to, this is good cake." Sighing contentedly she smiles up at her brother, "I'll have to get back to work soon sadly but I'm glad you came to see me, it's been madness since the attack."
Alexander looks back at Callista, "Don't worry about it." Alexander hands the cake over to Callista, "Take the cake with you. I think you will need the cake more than I do and I will go back to reading and waiting to see what QUODEL has to say before I get back to you about medical or anything else in the fleet." Alexander then stops and he looks back at Callista offering a kind smile, "Take care of yourself and know that I am worrying about you and thinking about you."
