Growling up in a family that had been poor for as long as one can remember, Kadena never really knew what it was like to live in anything remotely resembling privilege. The highlands of Aerilon were perfect for the large family; with Ma and Pa having to feed their six kids along with take care of Pa's parents, Grannie and Papa, the fact that they had the ability to live off the land helped keep them all fed. What excess there was was sold to bring in a little money which was always saved for the colder parts of the year when food and heating fuel would be scarce otherwise.

Kadena's childhood was filled with hand-me-downs and improvised toys but it never dawned on her that it was because they were impoverished. It was just how things were done in her family. Kadena's favorite thing to do as a child was to upturn her mother's pots and pans which she'd bang on; even from an early age she exhibited a great sense of rhythm and would put on shows for her family, a high point in their lives. When she got older she'd go fishing (noodling, usually) and help with the skinning of whatever her brothers, father and grandpa would come home with after a hunt and also help with gathering food from the fields and other chores like milk the cows and gather up the eggs from the chicken coop.

Schooling took place in a small town that was not too far from the Macer farmstead; with no money for tuition it was never expected that they'd go to college or ever leave the colony they've lived upon for generations. It was pretty much a 'given' that the Macer children would continue the tradition by establishing farms of their own upon plots of family-owned land and having large families as well. Kadena was more than fine with that but someone seemed to have other plans for her. Just shy of her turning seventeen her father suffered a massive stroke. He survived but would be forever changed and unable to work any longer. Not sure what she could do, Kadena decided to enlist upon graduation so she can have money to send home to her family who were now in dire straights.

• Has an abrupt way of saying things at times, almost bordering on rude. When asked, she points out that it is part of growing up on a farm where one does not have time to beat around the bush.

• Years away from Aerilon has managed to erase the majority of her accent with it only really being noticeable when tired, stressed or intoxicated.
