Memoir: Galen

An older man with a broad mustache stands in an arid field with a young boy, no more than three years old. The man wears frilled leather chaps over his jeans, and a pale button-down shirt left open to the sternum. The boy's blue plaid hangs over the waist of his jeans, only the first button undone despite the protestations of his fussing mother. Both wear matching white Stetsons, though the boy's is proportionately smaller. In the background, horses graze on the dried grass as it whips in the wind; farther back, sparse trees cover foothills, then fade away as they creep up into a mountain range.
